Speaker Bagbin lauds journalists for their role in promoting transparency and accountability

The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin underscored the media’s vital role in promoting transparency and accountability within Parliament, and lauded Press Corps for their tireless commitment to informing the public with accuracy and integrity.

The Speaker emphasized that the media serves as a critical partner in democracy, acting as a bridge between Parliament and the people. He praised the Parliamentary Press Corps for their dedication to disseminating accurate information on parliamentary proceedings and activities, stressing that responsible journalism is essential for an informed citizenry.

Speaker Babin was speaking when Parliament held a media soiree and recognition night to show appreciation to members of the Parliamentary Press Corps on Saturday, December 20.

He highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration between Parliament and the media to enhance public understanding of governance. He reinforced the media’s watchdog role in holding Parliament accountable, while acknowledging the challenges faced by journalists, including misinformation and the pressure for unbiased reporting. Reiterating Parliament’s commitment to transparency, he announced continued efforts to engage with the media and improve public access to information.

Concluding the remarks, the Speaker commended the Press Corps for their creative storytelling that makes complex legislative issues accessible to a broad audience. The Press Corps honoured Mr. Speaker and the Clerk to Parliament for their outstanding support and leadership. Some members of the Press Corps also received awards for their excellence in parliamentary reporting.
