NORTHERN REGIONAL PRISONS INTER-STATION GAMES HELD IN TAMALE

The Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Prisons Service has successfully organized its Inter-Station Prisons Festival for institutions across the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions.

The sporting festival featured a range of activities including indoor games, volleyball, and football, aimed at promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and unity among officers of the service.
In a brief address to officially open the games, the Northern Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Obed Kofi Acquaye, said the festival was primarily meant to promote good health among officers. He later kicked the ball to symbolically signal the start of the competition.

Speaking in an interview, DDP Acquaye explained that the initiative is in line with the vision of the Director-General of Prisons, who encourages regular physical activity among officers to ensure they remain mentally and physically fit to carry out their duties effectively.
“The Director-General found it very important that occasionally we meet and exercise through games so that we maintain our posture and fitness to be able to take care of the inmates entrusted to us,” he stated.
The Regional Commander further noted that the inter-station games have been in existence for some time and are intended to be an annual event. Although the 2025 edition was originally scheduled to run for three days, it was limited to a single day due to security considerations.
“This year we were supposed to do it from the 3rd to the 5th, but due to security concerns, we have had to organize it for just one day,” he added.
DDP Acquaye also highlighted the Think Prison 360 Initiative, which focuses on the holistic management and welfare of officers within the service. He described the sporting festival as part of the welfare component of the initiative, which also helps position the Prisons Service as an active part of the wider community.
