Medeama part ways with club legend Kwasi Donsu after iconic decade

Medeama SC have officially announced the departure of long-serving captain and club legend Kwasi Donsu, bringing an end to a remarkable 10-year journey with the Tarkwa-based club. The 29-year-old midfielder leaves by mutual consent, despite having one year remaining on his contract.

Donsu’s name is etched in Medeama’s history, having played a pivotal role in one of the club’s most successful eras.

During his decade-long spell, he helped the Yellow and Mauves to one Ghana Premier League title, two FA Cup triumphs, and multiple continental campaigns, including appearances in the group stages of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Since making his debut 11 years ago, Donsu grew into a central figure at the heart of Medeama’s midfield. Renowned for his deadly set-piece ability, the midfield maestro scored over 40 goals in all competitions, an exceptional return for a player in his position.

His 2015-16 season remains one of the most iconic in recent domestic football memory, as he netted 15 goals, 10 of which came from free kicks. From dipping curlers to thunderous long-range efforts, Donsu exhibited a wide array of free-kick techniques that consistently left goalkeepers rooted to the spot.

In 2019, Donsu broadened his horizons with a season-long loan stint at USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the United States, where he continued to develop his game and gain valuable international experience.

In a groundbreaking move in August 2023, Donsu was among nine Medeama players who joined Maltese Premier League side Sirens FC, marking the largest-ever player transfer between a Ghanaian club and a single European side.

Despite a year remaining on his current contract, both parties have amicably agreed to part ways, a gesture Medeama says reflects the club’s desire to honor one of its greatest-ever players.

Kwasi Donsu departs Medeama as more than just a player; he leaves as a symbol of loyalty, consistency, and brilliance. His impact in Tarkwa and Ghanaian football as a whole will be remembered for years to come.
