Major overhaul of workers’ rights to be outlined

Millions of people are set to get stronger protections from unfair dismissal from their first day in a job under a planned overhaul of workers’ rights.

Workers will also be able to get statutory sick pay from the first day they are ill and claim unpaid parental leave from day one, under measures being announced in the Employment Rights Bill.

Many of the planned changes will not take effect before autumn 2026 following a period of consultation.

The government said the 28 measures in the bill marked the “biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation”, but business groups have expressed concerns about how the changes will work in practice.
