Mahama’s LGBTQ+ comments disappointing – Ntim Fordjour

One of the sponsors of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for remarks suggesting the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is not among Ghana’s most pressing priorities.

President Mahama made the comments during an engagement with civil society organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, noting that while the bill is important, it does not rank among the nation’s immediate challenges.

“I explained during my recent engagement with the World Affairs Council that it is not the most important issue we face as a nation. We are still grappling with the provisions of basic needs of  education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” President Mahama said.

Speaking to Citi News on March 31, Rev. Ntim Fordjour said the government had failed Ghanaians with its stance, arguing that the President’s comments downplayed an issue many consider significant.

“What he said… was even more dangerous, saying that it is Parliament that is trying to do their own bill,” he said, drawing comparisons with former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He added that similar remarks from a previous administration would have sparked public outrage.

“If this statement coming from President Mahama today had come from President Akufo-Addo anywhere between 2021 and 2024, all hell would have broken loose,” he said.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour also questioned what he described as the silence of key societal groups who had previously been vocal on the issue.

“My question is: Where are the communal bodies? Where are the faith-based organisations? Where are the imams, the pastors, the traditional rulers, the CSOs who spat fire and brimstone in 2024?” he asked.
