Mahama welcomes Ghanaian troops after 90-day hurricane relief mission in the Caribbean

President John Mahama has welcomed home a 54-member engineering contingent of the Ghana Armed Forces following the successful completion of a humanitarian mission in Jamaica which was devastated by Hurricane Melissa.
The contingent, deployed on December 16, 2025, was initially tasked with supporting recovery efforts in the aftermath of the disaster, which left widespread destruction across several communities.
Over a 90-day period, the Ghanaian troops played a critical role in rebuilding lives and restoring hope, particularly in Saint Elizabeth Parish, one of the hardest-hit areas. Communities such as Middle Quarters, Black River, Thornton, and surrounding towns benefited significantly from the intervention, with dozens of homes reconstructed and rehabilitated.
Originally scheduled as a 30-day operation, the mission was first extended to 60 days and later to 90 days as the true scale of devastation became evident. The extension allowed the team to deepen its impact and respond more effectively to the urgent needs on the ground.
Beyond the reconstruction of homes, the contingent’s work spanned multiple sectors. The soldiers undertook electrical rewiring and other essential repair works to restore basic services. They also contributed to rebuilding key public infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and government institutions many of which had suffered severe damage during the hurricane.
Their efforts not only improved living conditions for affected residents but also helped restore a sense of normalcy in communities grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
At a ceremony held to welcome the troops back to Ghana, President Mahama commended the contingent for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication to duty. He presented a citation to the team in recognition of their outstanding contribution to international humanitarian efforts and Ghana’s growing reputation in global peacekeeping and disaster response.
The President also singled out the Officer Commanding ERT Company One, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, for special praise. He described his leadership as exemplary, noting that it reflects the discipline, competence, and high standards synonymous with the Ghana Armed Forces.
The deployment underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to international cooperation and humanitarian support, particularly in times of crisis, further strengthening its role on the global stage.
