President John Dramani Mahama has announced Ghana’s plan to become the first African country to make a financial contribution to the International Fund for Public Interest Media.
He said the move forms part of Ghana’s broader commitment to combating misinformation and disinformation and promoting independent journalism.
President Mahama made the announcement at the High-Level International Conference on Information Integrity and Independent Media in Paris, France, which brought together representatives from 56 countries dedicated to defending free and reliable information.
The forum, organised by the International Fund for Public Interest Media and the Forum for Information and Democracy, was championed by French President Emmanuel Macron. It provided a platform for governments and civil society actors to strengthen collective efforts against the spread of false information.
President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s financial contribution reflects its commitment to building strong media structures, safeguarding information integrity, and protecting democratic values.
He also highlighted the growing threat of misinformation driven by artificial intelligence, noting that while AI offers vast opportunities, it also poses risks to transparency and public trust.
He called on world leaders to promote responsible AI use and ensure that technology supports — rather than undermines — democratic institutions and access to truthful information.
