Jerry Afriyie shines despite heartbreak as La Louvière exit Belgian Cup in extra-time thriller

Ghanaian teenage sensation Jerry Afriyie delivered another eye-catching performance for RAAL La Louvière, despite their dramatic 2–1 extra-time defeat to Royal Antwerp in the quarter-final of the Belgian Cup on Tuesday night.

The highly rated 18-year-old striker was a standout figure over the full 120 minutes at the Bosuil Stadium, as La Louvière bowed out of the competition after a spirited and courageous display against one of Belgium’s most established sides. Afriyie’s energy, movement and composure consistently troubled the Antwerp defence, earning him plaudits even in defeat.

Royal Antwerp eventually prevailed thanks to a sensational brace from Gyrano Kerk, who struck the decisive blow in the 116th minute of extra time to break La Louvière hearts after an evenly contested encounter. The late winner tilted the balance and denied Afriyie what would have been a deserved near-man-of-the-match recognition.

Despite the disappointment, Afriyie’s performance further underlined his growing influence since joining La Louvière on a season-long loan. The young forward has quickly become a key cog in the team, producing impressive displays week after week and adapting seamlessly to the demands of Belgian football following his move from Spanish side CD Lugo.

Afriyie has already found the net twice for La Louvière and continues to enhance his reputation as one of Ghana’s most exciting emerging talents.
