The Greater Accra Regional Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, says his party will not relent in its protests against the Electoral Commission (EC) until its Chairperson, Jean Mensa resigns.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, he said that was one of the conditions for which the NDC will consider dialoguing over its grievances from the management of the 2020 elections.
The opposition party has been cautioned against unlawful protests and urged to consider dialogue or legal action.
“We are saying first and foremost, she must resign for the crass incompetence she has shown,” Mr. Coker said.
“Let us right the wrongs first then start talking. The first wrong to right is for her to resign and then we can talk because we have lost confidence in her,” he added.
Mr. Coker was speaking after police arrested 26 of its supporters for allegedly demonstrating, unlawfully, at the headquarters of the EC.
The NDC has been engaged in protest nationwide against the EC in opposition to the declared results in the presidential and some parliamentary elections.
The NDC is currently engaged in an audit of pink sheets but has not indicated if it will challenge the election results in court.
Its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has described the Jean Mensa-led EC as the worst the country has seen and accused it of mismanaging the electoral process.
He has also said an independent audit of the EC’s election figures is necessary to settle the tensions over the election results.
“As long as that is not done and we know there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the people in favour of the incumbent, it will be wrong for me to just leave it because we will not learn the lessons of this election.”
The NPP has, however, rubbished these calls.
