Gov’t reaffirms commitment to boost local production of sanitary pads

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local production of sanitary pads as part of broader efforts to reduce imports and promote domestic manufacturing.
Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, speaking at the commissioning of a new Softcare sanitary pad production line in Accra on Tuesday, December 16, said President John Dramani Mahama has directed that all sanitary pads procured under the Free Sanitary Pad Policy must be locally manufactured.
She explained that the directive is aimed at addressing limited access to sanitary pads and poor menstrual hygiene, which often forces girls to miss school during their menstrual periods, while also making the products more affordable.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that the allocation of over 200 million Ghana cedis in the 2026 Budget underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring girls have access to free sanitary pads while promoting proper menstrual hygiene across the country.
“…To reinforce this intervention and stimulate local industry, the President has directed that all sanitary pads procured under this programme must be manufactured in Ghana.
“This addresses the immediate social needs while supporting a sustainable domestic manufacturing industry,” she said, emphasising the dual social and economic impact of the policy.
