Ghana lost over GHS2bn to strikes in two years – FWSC

Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr. George Smith-Graham has highlighted the heavy financial toll that labour strikes impose on Ghana, noting that recent industrial actions have cost the country hundreds of millions of cedis.
He made the remarks during a dialogue with Organised Labour at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, March 17, as part of ongoing engagement between the government and workers’ representatives.
“All the strikes that we encounter in this country come with a huge cost. In 2024, we had 22 strikes. The 22 strikes we had cost the nation GHS 1.47 billion.
“In 2025, we had eight strikes and the eight strikes cost the nation about GHS 635 million. This year we’ve had some strikes and they all come as a huge cost to us as a state,” he said.
Mr. Smith-Graham’s comments underline the economic impact of labour unrest, emphasising the need for constructive dialogue and timely resolution of disputes to minimise losses to the state and the economy.
