GH¢50m arrears threaten water supply in Tamale – GWL

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Northern Region has warned that over GH¢50 million in unpaid water bills is threatening reliable water supply in Tamale.
The Northern Regional Chief Manager, Ing. Stephen Amihere Mensah, raised the concern over the growing debt burden during an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, March 24, as part of activities marking World Water Day. He noted that persistent non-payment by consumers is placing significant strain on the company’s operations.
According to him, the situation has been worsened by resistance to the company’s transition from paper-based billing to a paperless system, which has affected revenue mobilisation efforts.
He stressed that the mounting arrears are limiting the company’s ability to invest in infrastructure, expand coverage, and meet increasing demand for water in the region.
Adding to the challenge, Ing. Mensah pointed to widespread illegal connections, revealing that about 52% of water produced in 2024 could not be accounted for. He described the situation as a major setback to efficient service delivery.
“Illegal connections are rampant in the region. We are appealing to the people of Tamale to support us because we need resources to be able to serve them well,” he said.
He therefore urged residents to settle their outstanding bills and regularise their connections, noting that improved compliance is critical to sustaining water supply and improving service delivery.
