GCB Bank Invests GHS 1.3 Million in Tamale SHS, Renovates Dormitory to “Prepare Students for Life”

Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO) has officially taken possession of a fully renovated 12-room boys’ dormitory, a GHS 1.3 million project funded by Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) to bolster student welfare and academic focus. The initiative, which directly benefits approximately 300 boarders and indirectly supports the entire school population of over 3,000, underscores the bank’s broader commitment to educational infrastructure and youth development nationwide.

The comprehensive renovation transformed the facility with modern washrooms, disability-friendly amenities, new roofing, complete electrical replacements, structural repairs, and improved drainage systems.
At the handover ceremony, GCB Bank Managing Director Mr. Farihan Alhassan, an old student of TAMASCO, highlighted the profound personal and national significance of the project, saying “to stand here today as Managing Director of GCB Bank feels like the story coming full circle.” “It is a reminder that TAMASCO does not only prepare young people for exams, it prepares them for life.” He praised the school’s legacy since 1951 as a beacon for Northern Ghana and a nurturer of leaders, including the bank’s current Board Chairman, Professor Joshua Alabi.

Addressing the students, Mr. Alhassan directly linked the investment to their potential. “This renovation was done with you in mind. It reflects the confidence we have in your potential,” he stated. He congratulated them on becoming Northern Zone Champions in the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz, urging them to continue striving for excellence.
The Board Chairman Prof. Joshua Alabi, also an alumnus, echoed the sentiment of legacy, recalling his own formative days in the school’s dormitories. He encouraged students to care for the new facility, noting that the school “doesn’t just educate, they connect generations and shape destinies.”

The Headmaster of TAMASCO expressed profound gratitude to GCB Bank for its timely intervention. He noted his pride in witnessing the renovation during his tenure and reaffirmed the school’s historic role as the first secondary school established in Northern Ghana in 1951.
