GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the Executive Council had assessed the Portuguese coach’s performance and agreed that he should remain in charge of the national team.

Queiroz, 73, was appointed on a four-month contract to replace Otto Addo and led Ghana at the World Cup.

His future has been uncertain since the tournament, with reports suggesting that outstanding payments could affect negotiations over his continued stay.

However, Asante Twum told Graphic Sports that the GFA’s highest decision-making body had reached a unanimous decision on the coach.

“The council, which is the highest decision-making body, after assessing the performance of Coach Carlos Queiroz, have agreed that the coach is made to stay,” he said.

Asante Twum said he could not confirm whether the government still owed Queiroz, adding that he was not privy to the details of the coach’s financial arrangements.

The GFA’s recommendation, however, does not guarantee that Queiroz will remain in the role.

Any new contract must be approved by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is expected to finance the coach’s salary.

“The final decision does not rest on the FA. It must go to the ministry for them to look at the contract and approve because they will pay the salary of the coach,” Asante Twum said.

He also revealed that Queiroz had been informed of the Executive Council’s decision, although he was unable to confirm the coach’s response.

Asante Twum said he was also unaware of the specific terms of the proposed contract or whether Queiroz had submitted a counteroffer.

“I don’t know what the offer from the FA is to the coach and the counteroffer he is also proposing,” he added.

The recommendation is expected to lead to further discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz as they seek to resolve the contractual and financial issues surrounding his potential long-term appointment.

Meanwhile, Desmond Ofei has been widely tipped to take charge of the Black Stars for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.

Ofei has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate to take charge of the national team as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Carlos Queiroz, who was appointed on a four-month contract in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo, is expected to leave the role after his deal expires.

The Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the knockout phase of the 2026 Fifa World Cup in North America, marking the first time the Black Stars have reached that stage of the tournament since 2010.

But Afriyie, a former chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, believes Ghana would be making the wrong decision by turning to Ofei.

“If today we are looking for a coach for the Black Stars and Desmond Ofei is the answer, then we have a problem,” he said.

Ofei previously worked with Ghana’s Under-20 side and has been linked with a move to the senior national team following Queiroz’s expected departure.

Afriyie also criticised Queiroz’s tactical approach despite the Portuguese helping Ghana reach the World Cup knockout phase.

“As for Carlos Queiroz, I don’t like his defensive approach. It’s old-fashioned,” he added.

The Black Stars are due to reassemble in September as they begin preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

The Ghana Football Association is expected to make a decision on Queiroz’s successor before the start of the qualifying campaign.

Mr Afriyie believes perceptions that matches and results can be manipulated have undermined confidence in the league and discouraged companies from investing.

“The struggle to attract sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League is because many people see the competition as being manipulated,” he told Sporty FM.

“When a league lacks credibility, which company would want to invest in it?” he added.

His comments come ahead of the start of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, which is scheduled to begin on 5 September.

The Premier League is one of Ghana’s biggest sporting competitions, but concerns over its commercial appeal and financial sustainability have persisted.

Clubs rely heavily on sponsorship and other commercial partnerships to supplement revenue from gate receipts, broadcasting and other sources.

Issues surrounding match officiating, governance and the integrity of the competition have also been the subject of debate among supporters and football stakeholders.

Mr Afriyie argues that efforts to attract more investment should therefore go beyond marketing and promotion.

He says restoring public confidence in the competition will be crucial if the Ghana Premier League is to attract major corporate sponsors and secure greater financial support.

The new season will see clubs compete for the league title, continental qualification and other sporting ambitions, but Afriyie believes improving the competition’s credibility must remain a priority.

In a letter dated August 17, 2026, and issued through the FIFA Legal Portal, the world football governing body confirmed that a ban on Karela registering new players has been implemented.

The letter, signed by FIFA Head of Disciplinary Américo Espallargas, references an earlier decision under case number FPSD-23160 and states that Karela have still not fulfilled their financial obligations towards Camara.

“As it appears that, despite the Decision, Karela United (the Respondent) has not yet complied with its financial obligations towards Sana Camara,” FIFA stated in the correspondence.

As a result, FIFA has activated a registration ban preventing the Ghanaian club from registering new players at both international and national levels.

The ban will remain in force until the outstanding amount owed to Camara is fully paid. FIFA has, however, specified that the sanction can remain in place for a maximum of three entire and consecutive registration periods.

The decision could significantly affect Karela’s ability to strengthen their squad, particularly during the current transfer and registration period.

FIFA has also instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to immediately enforce the ban at the national level if it has not already been implemented.

The latest development places additional pressure on the Tamale-based side to settle the outstanding financial obligation if they are to regain the ability to register new players.

The amount owed to Sana Camara was not disclosed in the FIFA letter. The club will therefore need to resolve the matter in accordance with the original FIFA decision before the registration restriction can be lifted.

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people through skills development, mentorship, scholarships and opportunities aimed at preparing them for the future.

Speaking at the 11th Youth Empowerment Summit organised by the Martha Inspires Foundation, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, said the company’s partnership with the initiative was driven by the theme of this year’s summit, “Passing the Torch.”

She said the theme resonated strongly with MTN’s commitment to inspiring and equipping the next generation to become productive contributors to society.

According to her, MTN Ghana focuses on helping young people acquire employable and digital skills, access mentorship and benefit from opportunities that can help address unemployment and prepare them for the changing world of work.

Mrs Wiafe highlighted the company’s Bright Scholarship Programme, which currently supports about 1,220 students with tuition, laptops, accommodation and stipends to enable them to pursue their education without financial barriers.

She also announced the establishment of a Bright Scholarship alumni network, designed to connect former beneficiaries with younger scholarship recipients to provide mentorship, guidance and inspiration.

She said the initiative was another way of ensuring that beneficiaries who had received support could, in turn, “pass the torch” by helping others to succeed.

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Martha Inspires Foundation, Martha Anabela, expressed appreciation to young participants, MTN Ghana and other partners for contributing to the success of the 11th Youth Empowerment Summit.

She said the summit, over the past decade, had helped young people discover their potential and purpose instead of simply following popular career choices.

According to her, the programme had also enabled participants to make informed decisions about their education and careers, build networks that had opened doors to jobs, scholarships and other opportunities, and gain confidence through mentorship, conversations and interactive sessions.

Martha Anabela said the theme “Passing the Torch” was intended to encourage the older generation to transfer their knowledge, experience, skills and values to young people, while challenging the younger generation to preserve, improve and build on what they inherit.

She explained that the Youth Empowerment Summit formed part of the foundation’s broader youth development programmes, which include a youth centre, men’s conference, Young Inspirers Forum, public-speaking coaching, book donations to communities and boys’ empowerment programmes.

She added that the youth centre provides educational and recreational activities, including reading and writing, robotics, phonetics and games, particularly for children during school holidays.

The summit brought together young people, mentors, industry players and development partners to share experiences, inspire participants and create opportunities for personal and professional growth.

MTN Ghana said its continued investment in youth development forms part of its broader sustainability and social impact agenda, with emphasis on equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and networks needed to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.

On the matchday, Cameroon took control of the final in the 20th minute when Ngah opened the scoring. The Indomitable Lionesses continued to threaten and doubled their advantage 10 minutes later through Ndjoah Eto, who finished after being set up by Myriam Nyadjou.

Malawi struggled to contain Cameroon’s attacking pressure, and the Scorchers conceded again just before the break.

Ngah completed her brace three minutes into first-half stoppage time, with Ndjoah Eto providing the assist to put Cameroon 3-0 ahead.

The three-goal advantage effectively settled the final before the interval.

The triumph represents a historic breakthrough for Cameroon, who had previously lost three WAFCON finals.

The Indomitable Lionesses were beaten by Nigeria in the 2004, 2014 and 2016 finals, leaving them to endure repeated disappointment on the continental stage.

This time, however, Cameroon made no mistake. Ten years after losing the 2016 final on home soil, they finally reached the summit of African women’s football.

Malawi’s remarkable debut WAFCON campaign ended in defeat, but reaching the final represented a major achievement for the Scorchers.

Cameroon’s victory also made them only the fourth nation to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, joining Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

Ghana are currently without a substantive head coach following the reported departure of Carlos Queiroz after disagreements with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over his demands.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September as they begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has been linked with the vacant position, but Tanko has also emerged as a potential candidate, having previously served as an assistant to former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah.

The Medeama coach says he would consider taking the job if the authorities believe he is the right person to lead the national team and provide him with the necessary support.

“If the Black Stars coaching opportunity comes and the authorities believe I’m the right man for the job, why not?” Tanko told Asempa FM.

Tanko has considerable experience with Ghana’s national teams. He previously coached the Black Meteors, the country’s Under-23 side, although he was unable to guide the team to qualification for the Olympic Games.

Should the Ghana Football Association appoint a new head coach, it would be the seventh coach to take charge of the Black Stars during Kurt Okraku’s tenure as GFA president.

Ghana missed out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and will be determined to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

For Tanko, a return to the national team setup would represent another opportunity to contribute to Ghanaian football, this time at its highest level.

Infantino’s presence at the final comes at a difficult time for his leadership of world football, with growing opposition from some of FIFA’s confederations and senior officials.

The presidents of UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF recently issued an open letter expressing concerns over Infantino’s conduct and calling for an independent review of FIFA’s now-abandoned proposal to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights.

The confederations accused the FIFA president of damaging trust and called for stronger leadership and governance within the organisation.

Despite the growing pressure, Infantino continues to enjoy significant support in Africa and South America as he prepares for next year’s FIFA presidential election.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has previously indicated that Infantino’s future should be decided through the election process rather than other means.

“If you want to remove him, go to the elections. Let the 211 member associations decide,” Motsepe told Sky.

Motsepe’s position could prove important given the influence of African football’s 54 member associations in FIFA elections.

Infantino’s attendance at the WAFCON final also comes as FIFA continues to strengthen its relationship with African football. The continent has become an important part of FIFA’s global development plans, while the expansion of major competitions has created greater opportunities for African national teams.

The FIFA president watched Cameroon produce a commanding performance against Malawi, with Marie Ngah scoring twice and Naomi Ndjoah Eto adding another goal to secure the title.

For Cameroon, the victory ended years of disappointment after previous final defeats in 2004, 2014 and 2016.

For Infantino, his appearance in Rabat provided another opportunity to maintain his connection with African football as the battle over FIFA’s leadership gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 election.

The South African coach was confirmed as the Porcupine Warriors’ new manager following a disappointing campaign in which Kotoko failed to secure a place in the top four.

Tinkler, who has previously managed clubs including Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City, has been tasked with helping Kotoko return to the top end of Ghanaian football.

Menzo believes the 55-year-old is the right man to lead the club and praised his record of building competitive teams.

“We appointed the best coach we could have. He has built clubs to a high standard,” Menzo told the club’s official media.

Tinkler has already begun preparations with the squad as Kotoko look to put last season’s struggles behind them and challenge for major honours in the new campaign.

The Reds are currently based in Accra as they step up their preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Their readiness will be tested in the 2026 Democracy Cup, where they will face fierce rivals Hearts of Oak in one of the most anticipated fixtures on the Ghanaian football calendar.

The match will give Tinkler an early opportunity to assess his squad in a competitive environment as he begins his tenure at one of Ghana’s most successful clubs.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko will open their 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season with an away game against Debibi United.
