However, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has indicated that the governing body could reconsider the change, reopening the debate over the tournament’s future format.

According to Afrik-Foot, a proposal to restore the biennial schedule is expected to be put to a vote at CAF’s ordinary general assembly in Abuja, Nigeria, on 21 November.

Renard, who previously managed several national teams, believes retaining the traditional two-year cycle would be more appropriate for African football.

Speaking to Afrik-Foot, the French coach said: “I think returning to holding the Africa Cup of Nations every two years is excellent, and that the tournament should continue as it was in the past.

“Holding the tournament every four years is far too long in my view, but that is my personal opinion.”

The suspension followed a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service investigating the allegations of financial irregularities.

Speaking about his suspension, Ampofo Ankrah said he respected the investigative process and would wait for the findings before making further comments on the matter.

“I’m 200% confident that I’ll be exonerated,” he said.

He also urged the media and the public to exercise caution and avoid spreading unverified information while the investigations remain ongoing.

“People should be very cautious about what they put out there that they cannot verify,” Ampofo Ankrah said, calling on journalists to verify their sources and report the developments professionally.

The former NSA boss said the investigations had progressed smoothly so far and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the authorities.

“I’m very happy that so far the investigations have gone very smoothly, and we’re just waiting for the final report to be released,” he added.

Ampofo Ankrah disclosed that he had met with the police on two occasions and would provide further information if required by investigators.

The allegations have drawn significant public attention, with the authorities seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported payments and the arrangements made for prospective travellers ahead of the World Cup.

The concerns emerged on Friday, October 17, 2026, when the committee continued its examination of the Auditor-General’s Report for the year ending 2024, focusing on the factors contributing to ECG’s financial difficulties and measures being implemented to improve its position.

Committee members questioned ECG officials about the causes of the reported losses and what the company was doing to strengthen its finances and ensure long-term financial sustainability.

Responding to the concerns, ECG Managing Director, Ing. Julius Kwame Kpekpena, said the government was taking steps to reduce the cost of electricity purchases, which he identified as a major factor driving the company’s costs.

“Throughout 2025 and 2026, the government has been making efforts to reduce the cost of power purchases through negotiations with IPPs, and we have received significant discounts from the negotiations,” he said.

He added that the introduction of competitive procurement for additional electricity generation was another measure intended to lower production costs.

“There’s also the law for competitive procurement of additional generation, meant to reduce the cost of production. So there are a lot of measures the government is implementing to reduce the cost. The cost at which we buy the power is what is driving the cost,” he said.

The committee also examined electricity tariffs, with ECG indicating that tariff adjustments might be necessary to enable the company to break even and improve its financial sustainability.

The discussions form part of the committee’s ongoing review of the Auditor-General’s findings and efforts to ensure accountability in the management of public resources.

Western North, which currently has no operational commercial airport, is expected to benefit from the planned infrastructure under the initiative.

He said the proposed facilities would provide landing sites for aircraft during emergencies, particularly in regions that currently lack the infrastructure to receive them.

Speaking during a courtesy call by chiefs of the Western North Region, President Mahama said Western North would be among the beneficiaries of the initiative.

The President explained that regions with existing airports would not require the additional facilities, while those without airports would be provided with airstrips measuring approximately two kilometres in length.

President Mahama said the initiative was intended to improve access to air transport during critical situations, including cases requiring urgent medical evacuation.

“We are going to provide an airstrip in every region that does not already have an airport. Sometimes there are emergencies, and sometimes medical evacuations are necessary. At the moment, some regions do not have landing sites for aircraft.

He added, “Regions that already have airports are covered, but those without airports will receive landing strips. They will be about two kilometres long and will have a small control office so that aircraft can land in the region in an emergency. Western North will be one of the beneficiaries.”

The accident reportedly occurred when the articulated truck, travelling from Walewale, allegedly lost control and collided with the Toyota Voxy, which was travelling from Bolgatanga to Tamale. The truck also reportedly struck electricity poles in the area.

Several motorbike riders were caught up in the crash, with some reportedly crushed during the incident.

The deceased are said to include a female student and a man who was riding a motorbike at the time of the accident.

The collision left several people seriously injured, prompting their transfer to the Tamale Teaching Hospital and other health facilities for medical attention. 12 injured people are reportedly in critical condition at the emergency ward.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Municipal Chief Executive for West Mamprusi, Mohammed Jabaah, said 2 people had died, while 12 others sustained injuries. He, however, claimed that it was a Toyota Voxy that lost control, resulting in the accident.

“There was a collision between the articulated truck, which was carrying POP cement, and the Toyota Voxy. The Voxy lost control, resulting in the accident, involving several vehicles. Two people died and eight were injured,” he said.

However, some aspirants have questioned the outcome, arguing that other candidates who allegedly failed to meet the party’s eligibility requirements should also have been disqualified.

The vetting exercise, which precedes the party’s Northern Regional executive elections, has generated differing views among contestants.

Deputy Communications Officer aspirant Abdallah Abu Safianu claimed that some candidates cleared to contest did not meet the eligibility requirements stipulated in the NDC’s constitution.

Citing Article 8, Clause 2(1), he argued that aspirants seeking regional executive positions must have previously held positions at the branch or tertiary level.

He maintained that candidates who did not satisfy the requirement should not have been cleared to contest.

Other aspirants, however, expressed satisfaction with the vetting exercise, describing the process as smooth and transparent.

Some also expressed confidence in winning their respective contests.

Beyond the competition for executive positions, some aspirants called for greater unity within the party, stressing that internal cohesion would be critical to the NDC’s efforts to reclaim constituencies currently held by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Northern Regional Vetting Committee, Baba Jamal, has urged aspirants dissatisfied with the outcome of the exercise to seek redress through the party’s Appeals Committee.

He also cautioned contestants against indiscriminately placing campaign posters, particularly on highways and road signs.

Mr Jamal urged the aspirants to conduct their campaigns peacefully and with decorum.
