Eduwatch: Teacher deficit driving dropouts, go’t must act early 2026

Education think tank Africa Education Watch has called on the government to begin recruiting teachers in the first quarter of 2026 to address acute shortages in schools, particularly in rural communities.

Mr Asare appealed during a dissemination meeting on findings from an Out-of-School Children census conducted in the Northern Region on Thursday, December 11.

He noted that several communities in northern Ghana are bearing the greatest impact, as students leave school due to the absence of teachers.

“Government must make sure that every school has a teacher and the necessary teaching resources to attract and retain learners whose parents are interested in enrolling them. We are facing a severe teacher deficit.

“It is important that the government hires teachers in the first quarter of 2026 and deploys them to underserved communities,” he said.

He further urged the government to extend the School Feeding Programme to junior high schools, indicating that EDUWATCH’s research shows many students drop out after primary school, partly due to the lack of meals at the JHS level.

“We want to appeal to the Minister of Gender and the Minister of Finance that it is about time the School Feeding Programme is extended beyond primary to junior high schools,” he said.
