The overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa Naa Abukari Andani II, has made a passionate appeal to the general public, to desist from engaging in illegal power connections and the continues attack of staff of the electricity provider, NEDCo.

According to him, NEDCo  staff usual go about their rightful duties hence must be respected and cordially worked with to provide the best of services to the consumer.

The overlord believes that power theft do not only deny government the needed revenue generation, but also  serves as a recipe for fire outbreaks and electrocution which cost Ghanaians even much more.

Yaa Naa made this appeal during a courtesy call on him by the energy minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh at his palace on Monday, December 12, 2022.

The President of the Dagbon traditional council is Optimistic that despite the current economic challenges in the country, government will continue to pay attention to the urgent needs of Ghanaians and the Dagbon kingdom, if the people will support in their own little ways.

On his part, the energy minister noted that Irrespective of the resistance coming from the residents, the shift from the current metering system to the smart pre-payment meters for all households will still take place.

“NEDCo will from today begin to change the meters used by customer to the smart prepaid meters to enable them enjoy good services”

The minister noted was meanwhile quick to mention, that the change in metering is not to punish the residents for abusing NEDCo staff, but to help in the nationwide metering adopted by electricity companies in Ghana as part of their service improvement drive.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh believes the smart pre-paid meters will help in the revenue mobilization drive of NEDCo, as it will be difficult for recalcitrant customers of NEDCo to steal electricity.

The sustainability of NEDCo is said to be under serious threat due to the increasing power theft in the Northern area.

In his remarks, the Managing Director (MD) of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company(NEDCo), Mr. Osmani Ayuba Aludiba, revealed that the company’s loss in the northern area and Tamale in particular, constitutes an existential threat to NEDCo’s operations.

Mr. Ayuba Aludiba added that if the current power theft situation in tamale is not addressed immediately, it can cause the collapse of NEDCo in the very foreseeable future.

Whereas losses in the Northern area hovers around 45% of revenue, the case of Tamale township is around 48% , drugging the overall corporate performance below relevant regulatory benchmarks.

To deal with the issue of power theft and other negative practices that swindles the revenue of NEDCo away, management under the auspices of the Ministry of energy, have constituted a special revenue protection task force to help fight the canker.

The task force which was inaugurated at the gbewaa palace, will embark on a rigorous revenue mobilization drive for NEDCo at its operational areas.

The nine member task force constitutes Terence Ninnang (Esq), Ing. Ali Phillip, Madam Hilda Alhassan, Mr. Abdul-Malik Hussein and Mr. Winfred Sewua.
