Deputy Education Minister Dr. Apaak condemns unrest at Wa Technical Institute

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has condemned the violent disturbance that disrupted academic activities at the Wa Technical Institute on Thursday night, stressing that government “will not tolerate indiscipline” in any educational institution.

Dr. Apaak visited the school on Friday, November 21 after receiving a briefing from the Municipal Chief Executive, and later described the situation as “deeply troubling.”

“What I’ve seen is very disappointing. The situation is very worrying and it is having an impact on teaching and learning,” he said on Saturday after addressing the 4th Congregation of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Bamahu-Wa on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Despite expressing dissatisfaction with the extent of damage, Dr. Apaak acknowledged the swift response from local authorities and school management.

“Although I’m very disappointed, I want to commend the MCE, the board chair, the principal, and management for moving in to secure the situation,” he noted.

According to school authorities, a committee has been set up to investigate the unrest, which reportedly involved clashes between groups of students and external collaborators.

Dr. Apaak emphasized that the Ministry of Education will issue a full statement only after the investigative committee identifies the underlying causes of the incident.

“Because we don’t know the actual causes of this issue, we cannot speak in detail, save to say we expect the investigation to unravel what has caused this,” he said.

He further warned that government will not condone acts that undermine school discipline or lead to the destruction of public property.

“As a government, as a ministry, we won’t tolerate disorder, insubordination and the destruction of public property from anyone.”

The Deputy Minister’s visit brought together key officials including the Principal of Wa Technical Institute, Adams Saaka; the MCE, Nurah Danwanaa; Dasaana Adamu and the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare.

Security presence on campus has since been strengthened as authorities work to restore calm and resume full academic activities.

Dr. Apaak reiterated that ensuring the safety of students, staff, and school facilities remains a top priority for the ministry. He urged students to cooperate with authorities and called on the investigative committee to complete its work promptly.

The ministry expects the findings to inform future preventive measures and help secure a safe learning environment for all.
