Dafeamekpor: Legal Education Bill moves to consideration stage

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has confirmed that the Legal Education Bill is currently under consideration in Parliament.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One  TV on Tuesday, February 17, Dafeamekpor said the bill, a key manifesto promise, has gone through extensive stakeholder engagement and parliamentary processes.

“We went through a lot of processes and stakeholder engagements, but we are here. The bill is here. We are at the consideration stage. What that means is that it’s been laid. We’ve referred to the Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs. They’ve done their consideration. They brought the report. We’ve debated the report. That’s the principles of the bill. We’ve adopted the report,” he explained.

He added that the consideration stage is effectively where the law is enacted, with provisions being finalised to establish the legal framework.

According to Dafeamekpor, the bill is being treated with urgency.

“While it hasn’t been introduced under a certificate of urgency, the House is placing some urgency on it because we want to change the status quo, which we deem unfair. The new framework will grant greater access, essentially extending the mandate of the Ghana School of Law at Makola to the faculties of universities,” he said.
