Cabinet approves $250m for establishment of National Artificial Intelligence – Sam George

Ghana is set to take a major leap in its digital transformation agenda following Cabinet’s approval of a $250 million investment to establish a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computer Centre.
The announcement was made by Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister, Samuel Nartey George, who described the initiative as a critical step toward positioning Ghana as a leader in responsible AI innovation across Africa.
The AI Computer Centre forms part of government’s broader strategy to accelerate the digital economy, with a strong focus on applying artificial intelligence in key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education.
According to the Minister, Ghana’s growing digital infrastructure provides a strong foundation for this ambition. Mobile penetration in the country currently exceeds 110%, with approximately 38 million mobile subscriptions nationwide—an indicator of increasing digital access and connectivity.
The investment is expected to boost local tech innovation, support research and development, and create opportunities for startups and industry players to leverage AI-driven solutions.
Speaking at the National Stakeholder Engagement on Ghana’s AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), Mr. George further revealed that Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy has also received Cabinet approval and is scheduled to be officially launched on April 24, 2026.
