Bimbilla: Nearly 90% don’t drink from ‘old dam’ anymore – Nitiwul

Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has said most of his constituents now have access to safe and reliable water, following initiatives he introduced in the constituency.

His remarks come after residents of Dangbe, a community on the outskirts of Bimbilla, raised concerns over the contamination of their only water source. The community dam, built decades ago, had become unsafe for domestic use due to human activities, worsening residents’ daily struggle for potable water.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily Weekend on Sunday, February 8, Mr. Nitiwul explained that prior to 2017, residents relied heavily on the dam constructed in the 1970s, which proved insufficient, especially during the dry season.

“The issue of water crisis in that area has been a longstanding problem until we came into office in 2017 when I decided that we will tackle this water crisis head-on,” he said.

As an immediate solution, the MP oversaw the construction of mechanised boreholes in every electoral area, providing residents with a reliable source of safe water and reducing dependence on the old dam.

For a long-term solution, Nitiwul engaged community water authorities to upgrade river-based water systems. Contracts for the upgrades were awarded and completed before the last elections, ensuring a connected and sustainable water supply for residents.

“Largely, about 80 to 90 percent of the people don’t drink water from the dam anymore. They all drink from the enhanced community water supply,” he said.

Dangbe residents have also benefited from a mechanised borehole, which is maintained regularly to ensure uninterrupted access. The MP assured that any issues with the boreholes would be promptly addressed to prevent disruptions.
