Austria vs Ghana Preview: Black Stars face stern European test in Vienna
Ghana will take on Austria in an international friendly on Friday evening at the iconic Ernst Happel Stadium, in what promises to be a high-level test for both World Cup-bound nations.

The match, scheduled for 18:00 local time and broadcast live on Ghana Television and TV 3, forms part of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with over 40,000 tickets already sold, underlining the anticipation surrounding the fixture.
Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick has made it clear that despite the friendly nature of the game, his side will approach it with a winning mentality.
The former RB Leipzig boss believes facing Ghana offers the perfect opportunity to measure his team against a strong non-European opponent.
“Ghana is a technically sound team with physicality, athleticism and dynamism. This is exactly the kind of test we need,” Rangnick said ahead of the clash.
The Austrians head into the game after an intensive training camp in Marbella, Spain, where they fine-tuned tactics and built cohesion within the squad.
Rangnick also handed opportunities to new faces including Paul Wanner and Carney Chukwuemeka, both of whom have impressed in training.
Striker Michael Gregoritsch, who famously scored the decisive goal that secured Austria’s World Cup qualification, is relishing the encounter.
“Every international match is special. We are well prepared and looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
The game presents another chance for Ghana to test their strength against European opposition as they continue shaping their squad ahead of the global showpiece.
Head coach Otto Addo remains confident in his team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
“In modern football, anyone can beat anyone. There are no small teams anymore,” Addo noted, referencing the increasing competitiveness on the global stage.
Black Stars forward and captain Jordan Ayew echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of national pride and performance.
“We want to do well for our country. Every game is important, and this will be a tough one,” he said.
Historically, both sides have met just once before – a 1-1 draw in Graz back in 2007 – adding a layer of intrigue to Friday’s encounter.
With both Austria and Ghana boasting physical strength, tactical discipline, and technical quality, the clash in Vienna is expected to be a competitive affair and a valuable benchmark for their World Cup ambitions.
