Afenyo-Markin alleges Majority is blocking Minority’s bid to debate mass dismissal of post-Dec 7 appointees

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin is alleging there’s a scheme in Parliament to stifle the voice of the Minority caucus by the continuous failure of the House to prioritize the concerns of the Minority.

According to the Minority Leader, his side has filed a motion in the House to investigate the dismissal of persons employed by state-owned institutions since 2018 under the NPP has still not been fully debated despite it appearing on the Order Paper consistently.

He was speaking at the crystal ball series organized by the citizens bureau of Parliament.

“Attempts to bring this matter to the public space was frustrated. The first was a preliminary objection by the Majority Leader and when we filed an appeal though the appeal motion was allowed, the debate is still in abeyance.

“The motion was moved and seconded and one contributor was taken, it’s being 8 months. It always appears on the Order paper, we are unable to take it.

“A motion was filed in good faith in accordance with the rules in respect of Bank of Ghana and the GoldBod since December same was admitted and advertised on the Order Paper. We have been in session since we resumed, this is our sixth week or so. Government businesses have found space but the single business of the Minority is yet to be taken,” he stated.

The Effutu lawmaker urged the Majority caucus to use their numerical supremacy to ensure broader consensus in the House and exercise profound sense of national responsibility.

“A super Majority does not equate to infallibility, a commanding numerical advantage in the House must be exercised with humility, restrained and profound sense of national responsibility. Whiles numerical sense may enable bold reforms, it must also create space for broader consensus so that the laws we pass enjoy durability, legitimacy and public confidence,” he added.
