Mohammed Kudus named Black Stars captain for Sudan clash, says coach Otto Addo

Ghana coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Mohammed Kudus will captain the Black Stars in their upcoming AFCON 2025 match against Sudan on Thursday.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Addo entrusted the West Ham star with the leadership role due to the absences of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey.

Captain Andre Ayew is out of the squad based on the coach’s decision, while Arsenal midfielder Partey withdrew due to illness.

Richard Ofori, the second deputy captain, has not played for the team since AFCON 2023 and is no longer part of the squad.

Although Jordan Ayew, the seniormost player in the current setup, was expected to be named captain, the honor has instead gone to Kudus, who has been recognised as the team’s standout player since his debut in 2019.

Kudus has scored 11 goals in 36 appearances, and this will mark his first time leading the team, with high expectations placed upon him for the must-win game in the 2025 AFCON Qualifier.

It remains unclear if this decision will be permanent.

Ghana will face Sudan again on Monday in Libya.
