We’re hoping to construct 1,000 homes in 2021 – State Housing Corporation

As part of efforts towards addressing Ghana’s housing deficit, the State Housing corporation has indicated plans to establish about 1,000 homes in the country this year.

According to the corporation, work has commenced on some of these homes across the regions.

Ghana currently has an about two million housing deficit with many stakeholders calling on the government to address the challenge immediately.

But in an interview with Citi Business News, the Managing Director of the State Housing Corporation, Kwabena Ampofo Appiah indicated that these new projects would help address Ghana’s housing deficit.

“In the Greater Accra Region we completed three projects, and we have four other projects that are currently ongoing that we hope to be able to complete this year. In and around the country, we have other projects ongoing. The aim is for us to do total housing development across the country, so we are not just doing the Greater Accra Region. We are in Bolgatanga, Tamale and in the Western North. On Tuesday, I am going to the Western North Region to go inspect our current housing estate that is happening there.”

He added that “In Kumasi too we have a major estate that is about seventy percent complete. We are looking at starting another one by June, and it is also in the Kumasi metropolis. Off the top of my head, I can’t give you the number, but then the goal is to build as many as we can. This year we are targeting at least a thousand homes to Ghanaians nationwide.”

The New Patriotic Party under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo as part of efforts towards addressing the country’s housing deficit proposed some measures in their manifesto for the 2020 elections.

It proposed the establishment of two new bodies, the Ghana Housing Authority and the National Housing and Mortgage Finance Company.

The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye recently indicated that plans were underway to establish the Ghana Housing Authority.
