We’re happy with independent MP’s decision to side with us in Parliament – Fomena NPP

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Fomena constituency says it has learned from the mistakes that led to the loss of the Fomena Parliamentary seat to an Independent Candidate.

In a Citi News interview, the Fomena NPP Secretary, Osei Mensah, said he was pleased with the decision by the MP-elect, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, to side with the NPP caucus in Parliament.

According to him, the party needs him now in Parliament for decision-making.

“If we were to be repeating the candidates, they will win. However, constituency executives are always having a problem with their MPs. Some MPs also take their constituency executives to court and that makes it difficult for the executives to campaign for them.”

“And when that happens, the constituents will never come to find out why such things happened, and then it becomes a big issue. So if he [Asiamah] decided to join the party in Parliament, I am happy because we need him in making decisions.”

The party says a misunderstanding among constituency executives and the incumbent MP at the time is to blame for the loss.

Mr. Asiamah defied the orders of the party including being expelled and losing his seat in Parliament, to run as an Independent Candidate.

The Speaker of Parliament subsequently removed the MP from Parliament after the NPP demanded the invocation of its constitutional provision that makes a seat vacant after an MP leaves the party that sponsored one’s candidature.

However, he won the polls to retain the MP seat, and he is now the hope of the NPP which has failed to win Majority seats in the next parliament.

Mr. Asiamah did not contest the NPP primary ahead of the 2020 polls and the NPP was instead represented by Philip Ofori-Asante.

At the end of the December 7 polls, Mr. Asiamah obtained 12,805 of the total votes cast beating his contenders; Philip Ofori Asante and Christiana Appiagyei of the NDC who polled 10,798 and 2,608 votes respectively.
