Residents along the Bolga-Zuarungu road, close to the Metro Mass Transit station, in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital are calling on the Ministry of Road and Highways to, through the Ghana Highways Authority, pay them compensation due them. The compensation they say, will facilitate their relocation as has been demanded of them.
According to the inhabitants and traders along the stretch, the Ghana Highway Authority, January this year, promised to compensate them in a bid to get them to vacate the area to pave way for the construction of the road extension and diversion in the ongoing Bolga-Bawku road construction project.
The affected residents shared their frustrations with A1 Radio. Madam Stella Amoazin, one of the affected residents explained that “the Municipal Assembly came yesterday and asked us to leave the place. We went to District Chief Executive and were given a week to vacate the place so we do not know what they are doing. They should either bring the money or extend the date for us to leave the place. This is what we want to be made known to us”.
Another resident named Edwin Anane said, “we were told yesterday to depart from the place totally this morning which is totally impossible. [This is] because the highways made it clear to our notice that we were going to be compensated, and given a time to move out. We want to know why our compensation is pending because the law states that if one is being moved out from a home the person should be given ample time of three months for preparation. Now what are we going to do? Are we going to hang on trees,” he quizzed.
Another resident claimed that “they Assembly came some time ago assessed us and told us we are to be reimbursed but to no avail. They later on came yesterday and told us to leave if not they are going to bring police and military to evict us forcefully”.
Meanwhile attempts to get comments from the Ghana Highways Authority on the Day Break Upper East Show proved futile.
