‘Reckless disregard for COVID-19 protocols at Sir John’s funeral disappointing’ – Occupy Ghana

Pressure Group, Occupy Ghana, has expressed dissatisfaction with what it calls a total disregard for COVID-19 protocols at the burial of former CEO of the Forestry Commission, and onetime General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party, Kwadwkmo Owusu Afriyie, affectionately called Sir John.

Some pictures and videos from the event that went viral on social media showed how some mourners were neither wearing nose masks nor observing social distancing.

In one of the videos, scores of NPP supporters who were not wearing nose masks, clad in funeral attire and t-shirts of the late Sir John, huddled around the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia when his delegation arrived at the funeral grounds.

While condemning the act, OccupyGhana slammed government officials for their complicity in the development.

“To wake up to contrary behaviour by prominent members of the same government and other politicians, after we have seen the colossal human disaster that has unfolded in India, caused by unrestrained political activities and religious events that did not respect COVID-19 protocols, is both disappointing and frightening. We cannot show such a remarkable sense of recklessness and abandon in these times and not expect to reap disastrous and possibly deadly consequences.”

Occupy Ghana is worried that the event could turn out to be a “super spreader event with more deaths and hospitalisations.”

Sir John passed away at the Intensive Care Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, after testing positive for COVID-19.

The late Sir John was laid to rest in his hometown at Sakra Wonoo in the Ashanti Region on Thursday, June 3, 2021.
