GAMLS demand immediate constitution of National Blood Service board

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) is demanding the immediate constitution of a board for the National Blood Service.

In a statement on Monday, the association said following a news documentary on a blood sale syndicate in the country and other challenges with blood transfusion services, it believes that the constitution of a governing board, which hasn’t been in place for nearly two years will be the immediate solution to the issues.

“Having consulted membership across the country on matters relating to blood transfusion services and whether things have improved after the birth of Act 1042, the professional body could not agree better on any immediate solution than to demand for a governing board which has been absent for almost two years after the law was enacted.”

The association added that the law, as passed by Parliament must be enforced to ensure that persons found to be involved in the syndicate of blood sale, against the State’s plan of ensuring available, safe and affordable blood services are dealt with.

“Snippets of complaints in the various hospitals being corroborated by the expose on the blood sale syndicate indicate that till the law starts biting, all efforts to curb the menace associated with blood transfusion services will not be fruitful,” the associated noted.

“GAMLS calls on the Minister of Health to as a matter of urgency, finalize processes to set up and commission a governing board for the National Blood Service ACT 2020 (ACT 1042),” it added.
