The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ebenezer Kojo Kum, has called for laid-down structures that define the transitional system and how Imams are selected for Muslim communities.
The Minister, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, said the structures must, among other things, include qualities and criteria for choosing such Islamic leaders.
Speaking to the Coalition of Muslim Organisations of Ghana (COMOG), Mr. Kojo Kum urged them to engage the Muslim Caucus in Parliament and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth, Sports, Culture, and Religious Affairs, to help address the concerns raised.
He informed the delegation of COMOG to give him adequate time for the consultation of relevant stakeholders.
“There is the need for you to include a succession plan in your structure. This will help to provide a clear understanding of the intention of the Coalition,” he added
The president of COMOG presented the ummah Constitution and Model of Financing to the Chieftaincy & Religious Minister for study and recommendations.
In the concluding statement of the Minister, he brought the attention of the Coalition to the recent issues of LGBTI and the quest for becoming rich in a short time.
Mr. Kojo Kum encouraged COMOG to educate Muslims through all means possible on Islamic values to help shape the character of the society positively.
Concerns of COMOG to the Minister
The President of COMOG, Hajj Abdel-Manan Abdel-Rahman, earlier, informed the Minister that undocumented and unstructured form of leadership transitions are generating tensions among the various Muslim communities.
He averred that COMOG has, since 2015, started to generate measures, to prevent any conflict that may erupt in relation to the unstructured leadership transition system.
Presenting the Ummah Constitution to the Minister that guides the structure of succession of the various Muslim Communities, the COMOG President pointed out that there are religious leadership challenges in Volta, Western North, Ahafo Regions, and other parts of the country.
