Getting single digits shouldn’t be a barrier – Nabdam MP charges BECE candidates

Students in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region who are preparing to sit for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been charged to study hard in order to obtain single aggregates.

BECE is the highest examination that qualifies Junior High School students for admission into secondary and vocational schools in the country.

Even though the cut-off point which was aggregate 25 was removed to pave way for students who obtain up to an aggregate of 48 to benefit from Government’s ‘Free Senior High School’ policy, students who are preparing for the BECE in the Nabdam District have been admonished to put up their best and come out with flying colors with many obtaining single digits after the exams.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nabdam Constituency, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane who made these words of admonishment observed that the Nabdam district, because of its deprived nature has not had its BECE candidates obtaining single digits which ranges from aggregate 6 to 9.

“To the students, your exam is at hand. I wish you will come out with flying colors. I hope that in Nabdam, you will also start getting the single digits. I’m hoping that you will also join the elite districts that are doing very well so far as education is concern.”

The MP said this when he donated 800 exercise books and 800 mathematical sets to the Nabdam District Education Directorate for onward distribution to all the BECE candidates in the district.

He used the opportunity to advise the young adults, especially the girls to eschew all forms of deviant behaviors that could jeopardize their education.

Aside from other supports to improve the educational standards of the district, the annual ritual of donating to BECE candidates was birthed in 2015 before Dr. Nawaane decided to contest to become an MP for the Nabdam constituency.

The Nabdam District Director of Education, Mary Magdalene Wampakiyeah, described the continuous support to the education sector by the MP as overwhelming.

“It is refreshing and motivating to have leaders who always remember that they have young ones they need to help come out. Nabdam District is lucky to have such a leader who has made it a ritual that every year when candidates are about to write, he comes home and associates himself with them so that as they go into the exams hall, they are prepared with the examination materials to help them much prepared for the examination.”

She described the gesture to the students as timely since most parents from the deprived district could not afford to buy the necessary materials for the candidates as they were preparing for the exams in November this year.

The director also entreated the BECE candidates to study hard to become responsible citizens in the future.

In all, 730 students across the Nabdam district are benefiting from the MP’s support.
