Tanzania calls off talks among key political players

A meeting between government officials and key political players that was due to be held this week in Tanzania has been called off.

The meeting was to have discussed laws affecting political activities in the country.

The prime minister and other ministers, the registrar of political parties, police, journalists, and party representatives were scheduled to attend, an official told the BBC.

Juma Ali Khatib, the chairman of the Tanzania’s Council of Political Parties, was quoted by local media saying that the meeting would now take place in December allow for more people to participate.

The main opposition party, Chadema, and the NCCR Mageuzi party had earlier declared that they would boycott the discussions.

The discussions were being planned amid growing tensions over the ban on political activities – with opposition parties complaining of being denied the right to hold rallies as required by law.
