The president of the republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will be hosting the National Anniversary Parade in the Northern Regional Capital Tamale for the first time.
This will mean that Tamale will be the first to host the national Independence Anniversary Parade outside Accra, after over half a century has been observed in the nation’s capital since independence.
This was revealed in a circular copied to Fiila news detailing activities marking the anniversary celebration.
The weeklong event will consist of activities including Activities marking the Anniversary are as follows
- 71 st Anniversary of the 28th February Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting Incident on Thursday, 28th February, 2019.Venue: the Nationalism Park, Osu. Time: 8am
- Friday 1st March 2019 National Flag Hoisting Day to be observed nationwide. The Presidents Independence Day Awards for School Children will be held that same day at the Accra International Conference Centre at 10am
- Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving.
- Saturday 2nd March 2019 Health and Fitness Walk Celebrating Peace and Unity to be held at various sports centres across the country Music will be celebrated at the Tamale Peace Concert at the Jubilee Park, at 7pm
- Sunday 3rd March, 2019 Christian Prayer and Thanksgiving to be observed in all churches nationwide
- Tuesday 5 th March 2019 Rep The North…. A special day for Ghanaians to observe the rich traditions of Northern Ghana by proudly wearing a northern attire. Re-enactment of the declaration of independence by the Ghana Actors Guild at the old Polo Grounds. Time: 7pm
- 62nd Anniversary Fireworks by the Ghana Armed Forces will take place at various locations across the country on the eve of 6th March.
- Then on Wednesday 6th March 2019, The Parade will move from the Black Star Square in Accra to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale to be hosted by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Special Guest of honor will be the President of Niger, H.E Mahamadou Issoufou.
The parade will be on the theme: Celebrating Peace and Unity.
Ghana since 1957 has celebrated its independence on March 6 each year in remembrance of the toil of the founders and heritage of the forefathers.
The parade is marked with March pass by students, security officers, civil societies, business owners, and persons living with disabilities. There has also been lightening of the perpetual flame, cultural and acrobatic displays among others to add colour to the celebration that signifies Ghana’s independence from the British.
Display of equipment by the various security forces and the famous gunshots salutes have also been part of the celebration.
Heads of state mostly from African countries have graced the parades for the past years.
Meanwhile preparations are underway, by the Northern Regional Coordinating Council under the auspices of the Northern Region Minister Salifu Saeed for a successful anniversary.
