The Chairman of the Health Committee of Parliament, Nana Ayew Afriyie, believes the recent visit to some hospital project sites in the Ashanti Region by some members of the committee on the minority side was uncalled-for.
According to him, the Committee had already planned to tour the projects in December this year.
He thus expressed surprise that the minority side of the committee decided to do it on their blind side.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, Nana Afriyie said “I am surprised that upon briefing the house on plans to tour these facilities by December, the minority decided to go behind us and do this.”
“The manner in which the Minority went about this was not the best. It is a recipe for disaster. They should have at least prompted the authorities of their intention to do so. Their move is more like a breakaway, and it affects teamwork. Even if they wanted to go ahead, they should have tabled it before the team, so we reach a consensus. Why do they have to make it seem as though the majority side is opposed to this when in the actual sense we discussed this and planned it out,” he bemoaned.
An altercation occurred between the Minority members of the Health Committee of Parliament and soldiers on guard duties at the uncompleted 500-bed Military Hospital at Afari in the Ashanti Region last Monday during a familiarisation visit to the project site.
The soldiers said they were not under instructions to allow the MPs to inspect the project, but the Minority members, led by the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, would have none of that.
Mr. Akandoh said they were not intruders but rather MPs who were on official duty, so it was wrong for the security men to prevent them from undertaking their lawful duties.
The MPs also visited the uncompleted Fomena District Hospital.
The minority says they will ensure that government completes all outstanding hospital projects.
