Tamale: Tipper Truck driver jailed 40 years for robbery

A Tamale High Court 2, has imposed a 40-year sentence on Adamu Issah a Tipper truck driver resident in Tamale in the Northern region. Adamu was found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

The convict together with his accomplice, one Alhassan, who is at large, on May 24, 2022, hijacked a Toyota Hilux pick-up at Gbanyamni a suburb of Tamale which contained items including a laptop, mobile phones, money and other items.

According to the facts, the victim upon reaching his home after the close of work was accosted at gunpoint by Adamu Issah and his accomplice, got into the car, searched and took a mobile phone belonging to the complainant and asked for access to the phone, after which they jumped back into the car and bolted.

The victim then lodged a complaint with the police which led to the arrest of the convict who was at the time standing trial for a criminal offence at a Tamale circuit court.

During the trial, prosecutors searched the accused person’s home and found items including a pen drive, laptops and other items which linked the convict to the crime.

The court presided over by Justice Eric Ansah Ankomah, based on the evidence presented by the prosecutors, convicted and sentenced the suspect to 40 years imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the convict is concurrently standing trial for another robbery offence.

In 2016, the convict together with his accomplice, stole a Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GM8523-14, belonging to MTN, a telecommunication company in Tamale and was subsequently arrested in Togo and handed over to the Ghana police, he would be later convicted and sentenced two years imprisonment.

The information available to Citi News indicates that the convict has been involved in several car-snatching incidents in the northern region, and it is believed that he operates with an international syndicate involved in criminal activities.

Between 2016 and 2022, over four vehicles including a V8 belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chair Sofo Azoka were snatched at gunpoint in the Tamale.
