Walewale dual carriage road construction starts in April 2022 – MCE

The government of Ghana is set to expand the Savelugu-Walewale highway connecting the Sahel regions bordering Ghana into dual carriage road this year as part of its year of roads agenda nationwide.

The expansion works will bring a major relief to commuters on the road and curb the incessant road accidents particularly head-on-collisions on the stretch.

The contractor is expected to move to site soon and begin the reconstruction of the road by the end of April this year.

Municipal Chief Executive for West Mamprusi in the North East region, Issahaku Arimeyaw Somo, who disclosed this to The Custodian Online, said the contractor responsible for the project few weeks to the end of 2021 visited his office for a discussion pertaining to commencement of work and was optimistic that he [Contractor] would move to site latest by April 2022.

The project he revealed will be executed with funding support from the Indian Export-Import (Exim) bank.

He added the Walewale-Savelugu stretch reconstruction is earmarked as the first phase of the project.

In addition, the Municipal Chief Executive noted the second phase is the expansion of the Savelugu to Tamale road and the third phase is also from Walewale to Bolga in the Upper East region.

“This is from the JMC projects under the Exim bank of India – they are going to sponsor this particular project” he stated.

He further commended the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu, for collaborating with the municipal assemble to give a facelift to the road infrastructure and other sectors of development in the municipality.

Tamale road network

In a related development, the timely intervention of the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan, witnessed the immediate reconstruction of the Tamale industrial area road connecting to the Kumasi highway.

This followed the cry of residents to the government to fix the deplorable road network in the city.

The government in 2021 reconstructed several deplorable roads in greater Tamale with asphaltic overlays covering parts of the Sagnarigu municipal. A number of drainage systems and inner city roads are also ongoing in the area.

Alhaji Shani told journalists that the government has undertaken massive road infrastructure development to open up the economy for investment and indicated the Akufo-Addo administration is out to construct a 100 kilometer of roads in the region by 2024 and about 40 kilometer of roads has been done already.
