The Human Rights Court 2 Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Nicholas Mensah Abodakpi, has awarded a cost of GHS8,000 against the Electoral Commission in the EC-ROPAL case.
The court has also granted the EC an extension of time – from now till January 2020 – to implement the Representation of the Peoples Amendment Act (2007) popularly known as ROPAA or be faced with other sanctions.
The EC went to court to demand more time to implement the ROPAA after it was directed by the court to ensure that it operationalises ROPAA Act 699 by 17 December 2018.
The elections management body prayed the court to allow it another 12 calendar months to fully operationalise the 12-year-old law that will make it legal for Ghanaians living abroad to vote in general elections in Ghana.
In an affidavit to the court deposed by the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa, the Commission said it has not been able to implement Act 699 because of three main challenges that have bedevilled the electoral body.
