Akufo-Addo has held more cabinet meetings than Mahama – Information Minister

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has highlighted the number of cabinet meetings as a sign of the President’s deep involvement in the running of his government.

Nana Akufo-Addo has “got his eye on the ball,” he said after announcing the President’s 64th regular meetings of his Cabinet.

His predecessor, John Dramani Mahama only held about 48 Cabinet meetings in his four years at the helm of government between 2013 and 2017, the Information Minister revealed.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was addressing reporters Sunday, at the close of a four-day ministerial retreat at the Peduase Lodge in the Eastern region.

The Minister said the President has been holding more Cabinet meetings, he has made it the platform where his ministers pitch policy ideas for deliberations.

Ministers propose policies to the President and request his permission to execute them, he said.

It is also the platform where the President “follow up on tasks he has given his ministers,” Oppong Nkrumah explained.

The policy requests from ministers and follow-ups from the President help in ensuring Nana Akufo-Addo is not aloof.

Revealing some of the deliberations at Peduase Lodge, the Information Minister said the government reviewed its economic performance after almost three years in office.

One of the conclusions was that the economy is on a strong footing than the one inherited from the Mahama administration, he said

Inflation which was 15.3% in the final year of the Mahama government is now 7.5%. Economic growth which was 3.4% in 2016 is going to be above 6% as the year ends.

The Akufo-Addo government has also reduced the fiscal deficit from 9.3% to 4.3%.

He stressed the government remains “resolute” in consolidating these gains ahead of the 2020 elections and avoid the criticised pattern of expending big and unbudgeted which inevitably erodes gains.
