Politicians setting dangerous examples through Covid-19 super-spreader rallies – Ghana Medical Association

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is warning of a potential hike in cases of the novel coronavirus as political campaigns intensify ahead of the December 7 elections.

General Secretary of the Association, Dr Justice Yankson believes the rallies undertaken by the major parties have the potential of accelerating the spread of the infections.

The country has had cause to be concerned about the onset of a second wave of Covid-19 cases when the number of new infections saw a surge about a month ago, eroding the strides made by the country in the past.

President Akufo-Addo in his last address to the nation of the fight against the virus indicated the development is because many Ghanaians let their guard down.

He further urged that conscious effort be made to improve compliance and nip the virus in the bud.

But with political rallies heightening in many part of the country, health experts fear these mass gatherings are a panacea for a boost in the numbers.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe Sunday, Dr Yankson explained that the crowds, which he described as super-spreaders leave much to be desired in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

He, however, advised that the politician exhibit leadership by being innovative and not play ostrich as far as Covid-19is concerned.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye insisted that government is taking appropriate measures to reduce the virus’ spread.

He indicated that the party had made announcements of its branches across the country to ensure that the basic protocols advised by the World Health Organisations (WHO) are followed.

As of November 22, Ghana has 157 new Covid-19 infections, 1,146 active cases and 323 deaths. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has so far recorded 50,874 cases with 49,405 recoveries/discharge.
