Uproar over South Africa fuel hike

South Africans online are protesting against an increase in fuel prices expected to take effect on Wednesday.

The new prices were announced on Monday by the department of mineral resources and energy.

The increase was attributed to high costs of crude oil and exchange rates for the local currency.

Critics online are saying the high prices will further increase the cost of living.

“The fuel levy that we are paying is clearly now our biggest enemy. Government at this rate MUST do an adjustments because the ripple effect of this petrol hike will be devastating for a majority of South Africans already struggling and leaving on a poverty line,” Hadebe tweeted.

“How are people supposed to afford to live with impact of these extreme price hikes?” Kelly Robinson questioned.

The Wednesday hike will come two days after South Africans voted in the local government elections.
