Malawi police launch mask-wearing operation

Police in Malawi have launched an operation to enforce mask wearing as the country battles a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Over the past few weeks there’s been a rise in deaths linked to coronavirus, with new infections averaging more than 400 a day.

Despite the authorities’ concern, Malawians have continued to show a reluctance to follow guidance including mask wearing and social distancing.

Malawi police say Operation Vala Mask aims to enforce the wearing of face masks in public places, but will also include closing bars by 22:00 each night, and ensuring seating capacity of 50% in public transport.
