NR Minister urges public to seize indiscriminate felling of trees

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, has called on the general public to desist from the indiscriminate felling of trees and embrace the culture of planting trees to clampdown on the impact of climate change.

The Minister observed bad farming practices that have persisted over the years coupled with bush fires are contributive factors for the heavy loss of the vegetative cover and trees.

Mr. Shani therefore appealed to the of the region and other parts of the north to embrace the Green Ghana project spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and further desist from the indiscriminate felling of trees and more especially economic trees.

The District Chief Executive for Tolon, Fuseini Salifu Issifu Moshi, made the appeal on behalf of the Minister during this year’s Green Ghana Day last Friday, June 9.

“Let me use this opportunity to call on every family member to plant a tree to recover what has been lost, and must also nurture them to ensure they survive” he added.

Meanwhile, about five hundred thousand (500,000) seedlings are expected to be planted in the Tamale metropolis.

About one thousand, one hundred and eleven (1,111) seedlings were planted on one hector land at Nyankpala campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) last Friday.

The remaining number of seedlings were distributed to individuals and groups to plant Tamale.

For his part, the Northern Regional Manager of Forestry Commission, Dr Nsiah Bempah Ahmed said the effort of the government is to green the whole nation to mitigate the impact of climate change.

“The government is helping seriously, putting in the necessary money and any kind of resources that we need for us to achieve the desired results.”

He stated the people cannot therefore fail to protect the plants, adding “failure not to take care of the seedlings or trees means you’re an environmental armed robber and we believe everybody is taking part”.
