In keeping with its media monitoring mandate, the National Media Commission (NMC) is set to roll out a mobile application for the 2020 elections.
Speaking to Citi News the Executive Secretary of the Commission, George Sarpong, said his outfit is hoping to begin demonstrating how the app could be used from today.
“The app is our collective eye on the election. The other reason the app is important is that it guarantees transparency,” Mr. Sarpong explained.
Mr. Sarpong added that the NMC hopes “to begin the demonstrations on how to use the app by [today] God willing.”
The NMC, in September, admitted that it did not have the outright capacity to monitor the polls.
The mobile application is thus its alternative systems to enable efficient monitoring.
Speaking during the committee’s hearing on Friday, September 11, 2020, Mr. Sarpong said: “We do not have the resources and the capacity to be able to monitor election 2020. So we are working towards alternative approaches to regulate systems that can still help us make some necessary interventions.”
The software was developed by Soft Masters, a private company, in collaboration with the NMC.
It is expected to be called the Ghana Elections Monitoring App.
The software will, for instance, show the exact location and time videos are taken to determine their authenticity or otherwise.
The NMC also says this new system will enable the military and the police to quickly verify publications related to them to ensure prompt responses.
