Detained Tunisian MP goes on hunger strike

A Tunisian MP and critic of the president has gone on hunger strike to protest against his detention, his lawyers have said.

They say their client, who suffers from ulcers, has started a hunger strike to protest against “a civilian being prosecuted by the military”.

Yasine Ayari, who is also an influential blogger, was arrested and jailed by the military at the end of July.

His arrest came days after President Kais Saied suspended parliament and fired the prime minister.

The 40-year-old denounced the president’s move as “a coup”.

President Saied stripped members of parliament of their immunity and announced a crackdown on corruption.
