N/R TUC congratulates women on the occasion of International Women’s Day

The Northern Regional chapter of Trade Union Congress (TUC), today Friday called on government to help push for the passage of the affirmative action bill.

The bill is a policy objective of increasing representation and participation of women in governance, positions of power and decision-making through the enactment of an Affirmative Action Law.

In a statement issued in Tamale by Mrs. Felicia Kraja, acting regional secretary of TUC on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, noted that though women are not the main cause of gender disparities, they are those usually engaged to address the menace.

She further underscored the need for inclusion of women in decision making and to as well occupy leadership positions.

In labour unions she indicated that women representation in leadership positions is minimal and most of them can even be regarded as stereotyped positions.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “Balance for Better”. Mrs. Felicia Kraja used the occasion to acknowledge the many years of selfless and dedicated contributions by Ghanaian women towards the development of the country.  

In an interview with the acting Regional Director from the Department of Gender, Mrs Bushira Alhassan, noted that women contribute significantly to development, hence the need to be treated and handled equally as men without any bias.

She further urged women to also thrive and situate themselves well, to fit into various leadership positions at their workplaces.

The unions in attendance consists of the public workers union, Tewu, Health service workers union, union of industry and commence as well as organized groups such as the NAGRAT, GNAT, Concerned Teachers Association, Nurses and Midwives Association among others.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional chapter of TUC congratulates all women globally, particularly Ghanaian women on the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day celebration which falls on March 8 every year.
