N/R Minister Appeals to UTAG to Call off Strike

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Shani Alhassan Saibu has appealed to members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana to halt their strike and return to work while government finds workable solutions to their demands.

He made this known whiles addressing the audience at the UDS 2022 Harmattan School launch in Tamale.

According to the minister, education has proved its worth to economic growth over the years, and as such the Akuffo Addo led administration is employing numerous strategies to ensure an affordable and accessible educational system.

“The benefits derived from education have made it a fundamental human right. For that matter, most countries including Ghana have taken steps to make education accessible and affordable to all people” he said.

On his part, the representative of the Educational Minister, Dr. Eric Nkansah reiterated the Regional Minister’s appeal, adding that a possible suspension of the strike until a negotiation is reached between UTAG and the government will be crucial to students and the growth of the economy.


He disclosed that in an attempt to bridge the infrastructure deficit in the education system, government through the ministry of education is putting various measures in place to expand the UDS’  medical school infrastructure to facilitate increased admissions and social inclusiveness.

Dr. Eric Nkansah has meanwhile called on various Civil Service Organizations to support the government’s course to bridge the infrastructure deficit in various universities in the country.

He used the opportunity to commend the University for Development Studies for the Harmattan School lecture series since it turns the attention of government, stakeholders, CSOs, NGOs and individuals to deficits in the Ghanaian educational system.
