Martin Amidu’s resignation disappointing – Occupy Ghana

Pressure Group, Occupy Ghana has expressed its disappointment with the resignation of former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu.

The Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu on Monday, November 16, 2020, served notice of his resignation from office with immediate effect.

In a letter addressed to President Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr. Amidu suggested that President Akufo-Addo had not been able to ensure his independence and freedom of action.

Occupy Ghana in a statement, however, indicated Martin Amidu could have proceeded with his mandate by calling the bluff of the Executive and asserting his independence in the face of interference.

It believes Martin Amidu’s decision to resign is tantamount to surrendering the independence of the office of the Special Prosecutor to the Executive.

“When it becomes an attempt to creep on turf, we believe the best option is to call the bluff of the Executive, assert the independence, stick to one’s guns and proceed with one’s mandate. If we do not do this then we have surrendered that precious independence, back to the Executive.

“We expect there to be friction. Inherent in that inevitable friction is the expectation that each officeholder would hold their ground so that in the healthy equilibrium of tension, Ghanaians would be protected from undue governmental authority. That is why we are disappointed in both the resignation and its subsequent acceptance, which make it impossible for the decisions to be rescinded.”
