N/R: Muslim Council Gives Relief Items To Flood Victims In Buipe, Volta

The Northern Region Muslim Council has handed over large quantities of various food commodities among other relief items to aid the recovery of communities affected by this year’s floods in the Savannah and Volta regions.

The items, valued at GH₵150,000.00, included 200 bags of maize, 10 bags of rice, 500 tubers of yam, 500 bales of used clothes and 240 pieces of wax prints.

The items were presented to the Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu and officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) at a short ceremony in Tamale last Thursday, December 7, 2023, for onward distribution to the affected families.

The communities include Buipe in the Savannah region and Mepe, Battor, Sogakope, Mafi, Adidome and Ada in the Volta region.

Chairman of the Council, Sheikh Alhassan Abukari Issah, who lead the [presentation] in his remarks, said the donation formed part of efforts by the Council to help ameliorate the suffering of the victims of the spillage of the Akosombo Dam and Buipe flood.

The Islamic scholar indicated the Islamic religion teaches Muslims that human being are brothers and sisters and when a fellow human being is in a distressed situation, there is the need for the other to offer assistance and solidarity, thereby underscoring the significance of the donation.

Sheikh Issah further consoled the victims by emphasizing that the God, who brought this upon them, will again shower them with His blessings, adding sooner than later, this your pain and agony will be a thing of the past.

He reiterated the readiness and commitment of the Council to take every step necessary to mitigate the plight of victims of any form of disaster in any part of the country regardless of their religious believes.

The Council Chairman has also commended all those, who supported and contributed in diverse ways to this worthy course and further appealed to international bodies to assist the government to find lasting solution to this perennial problem.

“Our special thanks and heartfelt gratitude go to our Clergy in all the districts of our region for their wise counsel and guidance” he added.

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Shani Alhassan Shaibu, who received the items on behalf of the government highly commended the Muslim Council and for that matter the Northern Region Muslim community for the gesture.

“I am excited to receive these items today; let me be quick to state that in my life time, I have never seen an informal agency being able to mobilize this kind of support I am seeing today and that is where my excitement comes from” the Minister stated.

Mr. Shani said the items will go a long way to complement the efforts of the government and other stakeholders in ameliorating the predicament of the inhabitants affected, and gave the assurance that the items will be distributed the families who have lost their livelihood to the disaster.

The Northern Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Alhaji Abdallah Salifu also lauded the benevolence of the entire Muslim Community for putting the relief items together to support the flood victims.

“The Muslim Council has proven to us that Islam stands for peace and it is the responsibility of we [Muslims] to support our people in times of difficulties such as this” he posited.
