Malawi orders long-term refugees into camps

The government of Malawi has ordered thousands of refugees who have integrated into society to move to the country’s only refugee camp.

Some of them have lived in Malawi for years, setting up businesses and marrying Malawians.

The authorities said one reason for the decision was the rise of violent jihadism in neighbouring Mozambique.

The Dzaleka camp, which has a capacity for up to 14,000 refugees, is now housing nearly 50,000 people, with hundreds more arriving each month.

The refugees received a temporary injunction against the order but have now been told they have to move.
