Lifeline Consumers to benefit Free electricity effective August 2020

In accordance with the directives of the president of Ghana in his latest COVID-19  address to the nation, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company(NEDCo) will extend free electricity supply to lifeline customers within its catchment area effective immediately.

In a press release issued to FiilaNews, NEDCO stated that only residents who consume 0.50kwh/ month, the cost of which is Ghc 19.25 shall enjoy extension of the relief package.


This relief package is aextension of the earlier phase that covered between May to June 2020 In which all Ghanaians benefited

The latest extension takes effect from july,2020 and would tarry by a month as has become the norm. 

“That of July,2020 will be realized in August whiles Reliefs in August will also realize in September”. 

The implementation of these reliefs would extend to January ,2021 in that order.

The release signed by the Managing Director of NEDCo Mr. Osman A Ayuba stated emphatically that a customer who was entitled to the 50% rebate of free electricity in the earlier phase, would automatically be ineligible for the latest cost reliefs.

Meanwhile NEDCO adds in the realease that Post-paid lifeline customers will receive their relief of 50kWh worth Ghc 19.25 in their bills from August 2020 to January 2021.

In the event of challenges faced by any customer in receiving these reliefs, the power distribution company assures that their doors remain widely open for any kind of redress.

Nearly 1.7 million consumers of electricity will benefit from the government’s latest coronavirus disease (COVID-19) relief for the rest of the year.

Of this number, identified as lifeline consumers, about 1.1 million are served by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), with nearly 600,000 also served by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

They fall within the group of consumers who use up to 50 kilowatts of power per hour or about GH¢20 worth of power in a month.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 14th address to the nation on government’s interventions of COVID-19, announced that the water and electricity relief had been extended for three and six more months respectively with the electricity reliefs benefiting only lifeline customers.
