GSS, UNDP train journalists on statistical reporting

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has organized a training workshop for journalists on data interpretation and statistical reporting in Tamale.

The training which benefited over 40 journalists from the Northern Zone is aimed at helping the media to package statistical information adequately well, for their audience to better understand.

In his opening remarks, the Government Statistician, Professor Samuel K. Annim noted that statistical data churned out by the service usually do not get the needed attention from the media because most of them lack the know-how in statistical reporting therefore the relevance of the nationwide training.

He stated that in order for the country to development, journalists should avoid the misuse of statistical data from trusted sources.

Meanwhile he revealed in an interview with FiilaNews that the initial budget of 477 million for the population and housing census prior to Covid-19 will be adjusted to cater for post covid activities and protocols.

The journalists were taken through various critical training including; understanding basic statistical methods and terminologies, Communicating Statistical data, How to use data to shape the economic and strategic policy among several others.

Head of Communications at the UNDP, Mrs Praise Nutakor expressed confidence that the participants will make use of the new techniques learnt at the programme to improve upon their reporting skills on the various statistics from both the Ghana Statistical Services and the United Nations Development Programme.
